Anthropic Is Giving Young Companies a Free Year of Claude Team
Anthropic has expanded its startup program with a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in credits. Here is who qualifies and what a small business should do.
On 6 October, at San Francisco Tech Week, Anthropic expanded its startup program. According to TechCrunch and Anthropic's own Claude for Startups page, eligible companies can get a free year of the Claude Team plan and $1,000 in credits for building with Claude.
If your business is young, this is a free way to try AI across a small team. If it isn't, it's still a useful signal about how hard the big AI companies are competing for small businesses.
What actually happened
Here is what Anthropic's page lists:
- A free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, but only for organisations that are new to Claude Team.
- $1,000 in API credits. Anthropic says they expire six months after they're granted and only work on its own API through the Claude Console, not through other platforms.
- Up to $45,000 in partner offers (the "Startup Stack"). Anthropic says these come from partner companies, not from Anthropic.
- Fortnightly 45-minute office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team.
On eligibility, Anthropic says you qualify if you were founded in the last five years or funded in the last two. Bootstrapped companies are included, so you don't need venture capital. You'll need a Claude Console account, a company email address that matches your website's domain, and a short description of what you're building. Anthropic says most applications are decided within minutes, and some take two to three business days.
What this means for a small business or recruiter
The headline is the free seats. Five paid seats for a year is enough for a small agency or a small team to run a proper trial, rather than one person experimenting alone. Many recruitment agencies and small firms have been founded within five years, so there's a fair chance you qualify.
The bigger picture is that AI vendors are now handing out free access to win small companies early. Prices and free offers are moving quickly, so what you pay today may not be what you pay in a year.
What to do
- Check your eligibility today. The test is simple: founded in the last five years, or funded in the last two. If you're older than that, skip it and don't force it.
- Decide what you'd test before you apply. Pick one or two jobs, such as drafting client emails or summarising call notes, so the free year isn't wasted on aimless chatting.
- Set the rules for your team first. Decide what must never be pasted in, such as candidate personal data or client contracts, before five people start using it.
- Note the dates. Credits expire after six months and the Team plan after a year. Put a reminder in your calendar to decide what you'll pay for afterwards.
- Read the terms. Anthropic says benefits are subject to its Startup Program Terms and an Additional Benefits Addendum. We haven't read those, so you should.
The caveat
This is a promotional programme, not a product change, and Anthropic decides who gets in. We haven't applied ourselves, so we can't tell you how smooth the process is. The reports we read describe the terms slightly differently in places, so go by the official page rather than any summary, including this one. Free access is also a way to get you used to a tool, so work out what it's worth to you before you rely on it.
